A slideshow screensaver does not qualify, in my book, as an interesting screensaver, even if it is a slideshow of some amazing pictures of Machu Picchu. What follows is a list of some of my favorite Mac screensavers, in no particular order. All screensavers have been verified on my Mac OS X 10.9 system (and most should run as far back as 10.6). After Dark is a series of computer screensaver software introduced by Berkeley Systems in 1989 for the Apple Macintosh, and in 1991 for Microsoft Windows. Following the original, additional editions included More After Dark, Before Dark, and editions themed around licensed properties such as Star Trek, The Simpsons, Looney Tunes, Marvel, and Disney characters.
While the hype about screensavers has certainly died down, mostly due to iOS coolness, people still use them. I agree, they’re wasteful, but still nice to look at. Yesterday, internet superstar @SteveStreza asked his followers for screensaver recommendations. I tuned in to his mentions, and then did some digging around on the interwebs, and here’s a few that will definitely keep your screen occupied. All of these have been tested on Snow Leopard.

Flip Clock
SA writer Nick Wood (@gogocosmonaut) recommended this beautiful FlipClock by falseone. Unfortunately, the original link was dead. Wood was gracious enough to provide us with the .qtz file (which you drop into your MacHD » Library » Screensavers folder). I hope I’m not doing something wrong here.
Update: Here’s a 24 hour version, thanks to Jeremy Callan. /Via

Fliqlo
Turns out there’s another flipclock screensaver that’s not so ‘designed’, called Fliqlo. Very subtle, traditional, and perfect on your brand new iMac. Some say this has problems on Snow Leopard, but it worked fine for me.
Fantastic shot by our buddy Johan Brook.

App Wall
For those who loved the App Wall at WWDC, the AppWall screensaver will pull the icons of the top selling apps on the App Store and flush them on your screen. The result is much like the iTunes artwork screenie, except with app icons. My only complaint would be the apps switch a little too fast, and related to that, it way too much CPU to get the job done.
Word Clock

While I’m at it, I thought why not recommend the Word Clock screensaver. It’s a wall of words, the combination of which can spell out the exact time, down to the second. The result of which is extremely cool. In fact this also comes in a universal iOS app so you can have all your Apple products have the same clock (kind of wasteful though).

Polar Clock
Machinist calculator. I don’t need to remind you about the Polar Clock screensaver, now do I? An intriguing circular bar clock, that captivates the minds of anyone who gazes upon it. Truly one of the best.
Time Machine
There’s the Time Machine screensaver, which was probably more relevant around the time Leopard was just released. But it’s still pretty cool, especially if you use the RSS version.
Fenetres Volantes
There’s one last one, which is a little dated (from 2006), but it continues to intrigue the hell out of me. Fenêtres volantes, the screensaver that makes your desktop windows flutter around in 3D space, and then fly back when you need them. It uses some CPU, and the anti-aliasing is a bit of a bother, but it’s still very cool to look at. The original site has disappeared, so you can download it from a third party server.

macOS Catalina compatibility or lack thereof |
macOS Catalina 10.5.3 and earlier is not compatible with SaveHollywood. Things are working better on macOS 10.15.4. Starting with macOS Mojave, Apple apparently started sandboxing the Desktop & Screen Saver Preferences Pane. And, surprise, surprise, while doing that, Apple introduced new bugs. Among other things, this resulted in the standard open panel not working correctly any more in multiple cases. In macOS Catalina, Apple completely broke the standard open panel APIs when invoked from a screen saver. And, for the same price, they also introduced other issues. Working around this probably requires new APIs that are currently private and used only by Apple's own screen savers. Until either Apple fixes its bugs or provides access to the new APIs to 3rd party developers, there are no real workarounds to make macOS Catalina 10.5.3 or earlier compatible with SaveHollywood. |
What is SaveHollywood?
SaveHollywood is a Screen Saver module for OS X 10.8 or later. It lets you play movies when your Mac enters screen saver mode.
Movies, movies, movies, …
SaveHollywood lets you define which movies you want to be played. You can either add a movie or a folder of movies.
You can play:
- movies shot with your iPhone®, iPad® or iPod® touch.
- movie trailers (for example from the iTunes Movie Trailers website).
- training materials (for example: WWDC sessions, video podcasts, exported Keynote® documents)
- etc.
For a list of compatible video formats, check the Technical specifications.
Multiple sizes to fit them all
You can choose to enjoy watching your movies either at their actual size or in fullscreen. You can also select to have the movie fit the screen to remove the top and bottom borders. https://downzup459.weebly.com/download-shows-for-mac.html. Speaking of borders, you can add a virtual frame border around the movie if you wish too.
To make the public aware of which movie is currently being played, you can have the movie title and copyrights be displayed when the movie starts playing or you can periodically remind the audience of what they are currently watching.
Movies look usually better on a black background (when they are not sized either to fit or fill the screen), but if you want to use another background color, you can pick up the one you wish.

Silence is nice too
If you use this Screen Saver to display marketing information when the computer is not being used (similar to what you can see in Apple Stores), you may want to mute the audio of the movies. If you have a multiple-display configuration, listening to 2 or more movies at the same time can be confusing, so you can select to play the audio only for the movies on the main display.

Multiscreen
If you have a multiple-display configuration and want the movies to be played only on one of them, you can select to play them on the main display only.
